Imagination Library of Skagit County

Inspiring Early Literacy

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library partnership is a cornerstone of our commitment to early childhood literacy. This program delivers age-appropriate books directly to the homes of young children, instilling a passion for reading from an early age.

How the Program works

We are proud to bring high quality books free to children in Skagit County, birth to 5. By registering your child, each month a new age-appropriate book will come in the mail addressed to the child. It’s just that easy. The first book a child receives is “The Little Engine That Could™” (customized version).

Each delivery is personalized with the child’s name and mailed directly to the child’s home. This creates a gifting experience making books exciting! Upon the child’s 5th birthday they will receive a letter from Dolly Parton herself wishing them a happy birthday and will receive “Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come!” (customized version).

No parent will be charged or solicited to pay for these books. The registration information will only be used to mail books to children. All costs are covered through Dolly Parton Imagination Library, United Way of Skagit County, our sponsors and donors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to receive my child’s first book once I have received the email that my child has been enrolled?

What is the criteria for Imagination Library?

Receiving your child’s first book can take 6-8 weeks after being enrolled. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library processes the books about six weeks before mailing them. Penguin Books USA prints books specifically for this program, and that may affect the timing of book deliveries.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book-gifting program that provides free, high-quality books to eligible children from birth to five (5) years old. Parents, legal guardians, and other authorized adults (“Authorized Adults”) can enroll eligible children for the Library.

My older child already receives books. If I enroll my younger child, will they receive the same books my older child did?

The Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Book Selection Committee rotates approximately 25% of titles for each age group each year. Families who enroll multiple children may receive some “repeat” books over the years.

Why do my child’s books come at different times every month?

Penguin Random House prints Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library books monthly, keeping program costs affordable. The different age groups’ books are mailed as they are ready, which varies from month to month. Therefore, your child(ren)’s books can arrive at any point in the month.

I don’t live in Skagit County. Can I sign my child up to receive books?

Will my twins receive the same book each month?
